Initial production aircraft were designated 757-200. The first customers were Eastern and British Airways, and for the first time Boeing launched a new airliner with a British engine (by Rolls-Royce). Regular service started on 1 January 1983, and in November 1984 the first 757 with American Pratt & Whitney engines was delivered to Delta. By the mid-1990s Boeing had sold about 480 of these large narrow-body airliners and delivered about 260.
